Fujitsu, Toshiba to Join Hands on Mobile Phone Market

Fujitsu and Toshiba plan to combine their mobile phone businesses to create a joint venture in October 2010, according to a report by Nikkei on June 17, 2010. It is reported that Fujitsu will hold around a 70% to 80% stake in the joint venture, according to Nikkei. It is expected that the merged entity will become the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in Japan behind Sharp. It is estimated that altogether the Japanese mobile phone manufacturers will account for 3% in the worldwide mobile phone market.

Currently Fujitsu mainly supplies mobile phones to Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo, while Toshiba mostly produces mobile phones for another Japanese telecom operator KDDI, according to the same source.
